Peace Treaty Trails

Hiking and trails at Memorial Peace Park

Come walk the prairie, trace the stories, and stretch your soul.

Whether you’re here for a short stroll or a full day of discovery, Memorial Peace Park’s growing trail system connects you to the land’s deep history, vibrant ecology and quiet beauty.

Trail maps are available on-site and online. We invite you to walk freely, but please do not cross any fences or gates unless signage indicates public access. Dogs are welcome but must remain leashed at all times.

Trails and outdoor highlights

Red Rock Trail
The rust-colored bluffs that create the natural amphitheater come into view as you enter Red Rock Trail. The trail leads to a unique outcropping of the red Flower-pot Shale, a perfect spot to remove your shoes and connect with the energy of the land. The top of the trail provides a spectacular view overlooking the pageant location and the Gypsum Hills can be seen to the west.

Paved Garden Trail
This stroller- and wheelchair-friendly trail winds past our maintained gardens and play area, ending at the 27-foot teepee with hand-painted mural inside.

Enhanced Trails Experience
An evolving system of walking paths integrated with outdoor art, QR-style learning and points for reflection and wellness.

Interpretive Trails
Upcoming and ongoing signage brings the landscape to life. Learn about native grasses, fire ecology, invasive species and the rich stories rooted right here in the Kansas plains.

Peace Treaty Wagon Trail
Follow the two-track wagon path used during the Peace Treaty Pageant — where history still echoes across ridge lines and open prairie, just as it has for over 100 years. Access to this trail is seasonal for livestock management, please do not cross the cattle guard unless clearly indicated.

Families meander along the Red Rock Trail which skirts the serenely beautiful Pageant Amphitheater

Discovery is at the heart of the Memorial Peace Park experience; young and old alike enjoy exploring the park’s unique red-shale outcropping

As the stewards of Memorial Peace Park, the Peace Treaty Association partnered with Barber County United, Inc., with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas’ Pathways to a Healthy Kansas funding to catapult our vision of hiking trails to fruition. The Peace Treaty board of directors has made a commitment to impact the well-being of our community and visitors alike through year-round access to unique outdoor spaces. The Powwow, Rodeo and Grounds committees deserve particular recognition. The park that visitors experience today is made possible by hundreds of volunteers, local and regional supporters and donations and generous annual association sponsors. Memorial Peace Park is a constantly evolving community space — the next visit promises to be different from the last.
